    Common questions

Do I need an N95 mask?

Not for short trips, like walking to the bus stop or the mall, or when you're indoors. Wear a well-fitted N95 if you'll be outside for several hours and:

    • PSI is above 300 (Hazardous) and you're healthy, or
    • PSI is above 200 and you're elderly, pregnant, or have heart or lung disease.

N95s make breathing harder, so take a break if it feels uncomfortable. If you're elderly, pregnant or have a heart or lung condition, ask your doctor first.

    What about my kids?

No international standard (like N95) certifies masks for children. Keeping them indoors protects them best:

    • PSI above 100: cut down on long or energetic outdoor play.
    • PSI above 300: no outdoor activity.
    NEA Air Pollution FAQs, Q19 & Q33
How do I keep the haze out of my home?
    • Close doors and windows when the air gets worse. Open them again once it clears.
    • Run an air purifier with a HEPA filter sized for the room. A higher CADR cleans faster. NEA guide
    • Aircon and fans are fine. If your unit pulls in outside air, close its fresh-air intake.
    • Mop, don't dust. Dry dusting and vacuuming kick particles back into the air.
    • Skip candles and smoking indoors.

    I'm feeling unwell

See a doctor promptly if you have trouble breathing, especially if you have a heart or lung condition. This applies even when the PSI is low.

    NEA Air Pollution FAQs, Q16–17
Where do these numbers come from?

Readings come live from NEA through data.gov.sg and refresh every few minutes. The 24-hr PSI sets the day's health advice. The 1-hr PM2.5 tells you what to do in the next hour. The live camera views in the latest hour are LTA's traffic cameras, refreshed once an hour.
